A clinical Observation of 60 Cases of Intestinal Obstruction due to Adhesion Bands

Abstract
From January 1963 to June 1971, sixty patients were treated for intestinal obstruction due to adhesion
bands, at Kwang Ju Christian Hospital.
The following were observed;
26 cases (43.3) of patients were between the ages of 41¡60. Male predominated over female 2:1.
26 cases (43.3) were admited during the winter. Other cases were distributed about equally among the
other three seasons. The four commonest operations, were appendectomy 25%, gastrectomy 18.3, intuss
usception 15%, and biliary surgery 10%. Obstruction developed more often in cases of intussusception
which had been manually reduced, than in those which had been resected. Bile may be a cause of adhe
sions in some cases, as well as talc and starch used on gloves.
One cases of obstruction dueto an enlarging pregnant uterus, in which the obstruction was intermittent
after six months. Radical surgery and reoperations may also be implicated as a cause of obstruction.
Four patients had deranged electrolytes: hypochloremic alaklosis in each cases. Twelve patients had
elevated B.U.N. The adhesive bands were generally light colored and varied in size and number.
21.7% of the cases became obstruction within two weeks of the first operation.
A noble or a chold¢¥s plication was performed on nine patients with uniform good results. Also chond
roitin sulphate was used to prevent adhesion on 10 cases with good results.
There were fifteen patients (25%) with complications.
Among these were 4 cases of wound infection, 3 cases of recurrent obstruction, 3 cases of bowel larce
rations. The mortality rate was 6.6% (4 patients) of whom two patients had sever toxemia.
